Why Brown Iron Brewhouse Is Always Our First Stop in Michigan
Great beer, food and more near Washington and Shelby Township, Michigan.
Every trip to Michigan to visit Jen's family isn't complete without a stop at Brown Iron Brewhouse in Washington. This place has become our go-to spot for great food, an impressive selection of beers, and a welcoming atmosphere that makes us feel right at home. We're also big fans of Brooks Brewing, which is in Shelby Township. Some of our favorites there include the Peanut Butter Porter, the Barleywine and the Goblin King IPA.
We usually find ourselves perched at the bar at Brown Iron Brewhouse, catching up on the latest sports games. One memorable evening, it was actually our last visit in May, we watched the Carolina Hurricanes face off against the Washington Capitals. Although the Hurricanes lost that particular game, they ultimately clinched the series, adding a bittersweet touch to our visit.
The beer selection at Brown Iron is nothing short of spectacular, boasting over 60 beers on tap. We enjoy sampling the local beers from places such as Griffin Claw, Transient, Odd Side, and Shorts, while occasionally ordering a pint of favorites from breweries like 3 Floyds.
However, we were surprised to learn about a peculiar Michigan law that restricts sampling. According to Michigan Compiled Laws Section 436.2027, customers are limited to two samples per 24-hour period and only of the establishment's own beer, wine, or spirits. This means that, unlike in North Carolina, where we can sample a variety of offerings at taprooms, in Michigan, we're restricted to what's produced in-house. It's a quirky regulation that left us scratching our heads and, honestly, quite witless.
Despite this, the friendly staff and the mouthwatering food more than make up for it. We're particularly fond of the soft pretzels served with beer cheese and mustard—a perfect pairing with any brew. The menu is filled with smokehouse favorites, all made fresh daily, ensuring that every meal is a delightful experience. Be sure to order either the Brown Iron burger with Applewood-smoked bacon, cheddar cheese and caramelized onions, or go big, with the Whiskey Brisket burger, featuring Texas beef brisket, smoked Gouda cheese, crispy onions, and whiskey barbecue sauce.
Brown Iron Brewhouse isn't just a local favorite; it's received national recognition as well. It was named "Best Great American Beer Bar in Michigan" by CraftBeer.com for five consecutive years from 2016 to 2020. Additionally, Hour Detroit Magazine recognized it in its "Best of Detroit 2020" awards, highlighting its exceptional beer selection. These accolades are a testament to the quality and dedication that the establishment brings to the table.
One of our visits coincided with a snowfall—a rare treat for us North Carolinians living in Raleigh. Stepping out into the fresh snow after a cozy evening inside added a magical touch to our experience. It's moments like these that make our visits to Brown Iron Brewhouse so memorable.
If you find yourself in or around Washington, Michigan, a visit to Brown Iron Brewhouse is a must. Whether you're a craft beer enthusiast, a foodie, or someone looking for a warm and inviting atmosphere to watch the game, this place has something for everyone. Just remember the sampling restrictions, and come ready to enjoy some of the best that Michigan has to offer.

Now, it wouldn't be us without sharing a few other places to visit for a beer around the vicinity. Within a 30-minute drive from Washington or Shelby Township, you can find popular meaderies such as B. Nektar and Schramm's in Ferndale. True beer lovers have probably heard of Kuhnhenn Brewing Company, which has locations in Warren and Clinton Township. Griffin Claw Brewing Company or Rochester Mills Beer Company, both in Rochester Hills, are also worth checking out as well.

Not a fan of beer or mead and want cider or wine instead? Well, also within a 30-minute drive from Jen's home base, you'll find the popular Blake's Hard Cider in Armada (we both love its El Chavo, a favored mango and habanero cider) and Youngblood Winery in Ray, Michigan. For the ultimate wine lover, you'll definitely want to pay a visit to Michigan by the Bottle in Shelby Township, where you can buy and sample wines from around the state.
There is a little something for everyone, and that's why our visits back home to Michigan are always worth it!
